Restored the timber presence
The timber treads and handrail were treated as key features, bringing warmth and depth back into the stairwell.
A staircase renovation in an old Adelaide home, restoring the timber, turned balusters and period detail that give the entry its character.
Project overview
In an old Adelaide home, the staircase is more than a way to move between floors. It is one of the first architectural features people notice, and it carries a lot of the home's original craftsmanship.
This renovation brought the staircase back into focus by working carefully with the existing timber treads, handrail, turned balusters and carved landing detail. The warm timber finish contrasts with the painted balusters, giving the stairwell a crisp, resolved look while still preserving the feel of the original home.
The tall stairwell, curved handrail and overhead light all help the staircase feel open and graceful. The finished result respects the home's age, keeps the craftsmanship visible and gives the space a cleaner, more polished everyday presence.
What we did
Staircases in older homes need a measured approach. The details are often delicate, highly visible and central to the character of the house.
The timber treads and handrail were treated as key features, bringing warmth and depth back into the stairwell.
White turned balusters were finished cleanly to sharpen the contrast with the timber and highlight the staircase's traditional form.
Carved landing details, curved handrail lines and the proportions of the original staircase were preserved so the renovation feels natural to the home.
